On most days during the past 3 weeks, “getting ready for the day” has consisted of a face wipe, a new layer of deodorant, and the same sweats I’d been in for the past 24 hours. This might negatively affect your opinion of me, but I’m just keepin’ it real.

Last weekend I decided to actually get ready for the day, and Kristin and I had a picnic lunch on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. I brought along my flash cards and book of practice questions and actually got some decent work done! It was a much needed break, even if it wasn’t really a break.

And in case you hadn’t heard, pineapples are the new lemons.

I don’t even feel conceited when I tell you that I felt like a total babe in this dress. And for the record, it shouldn’t make any woman feel stuck up or narcissistic to make herself feel gorgeous and confident and to acknowledge that feeling. You hear that, ladies? Maybe other people will notice; maybe they won’t. It doesn’t matter. When I wore this on Saturday afternoon, no one told me I looked good, but I felt amazing, and I’m glad I have this blog so I can relive that feeling now!

Part of the reason I’m gushing so much is that it’s a pretty rare occurrence for me to wear something strapless, much less feel confident in something strapless. Or a halter top, or spaghetti straps, or even fettucini straps. I’m pretty insecure about my skin – it’s always blotchy and breakout-prone, and those things are a lot more obvious on someone with fair skin like me. So when my chest and back are showing, I feel self-conscious.

I realize my skin looks totally normal in these photos…I swear I’m not crazy, and I didn’t Photoshop these. We have some flattering light and a not-too-sharp focus to thank. You’ll just have to trust me when I say that this is a pretty special occasion and a pretty special dress. Since I love it so much, I should probably give a shout out to the company that sent it to me: Kika is a mother-daughter business in Los Angeles that sells American-made, eco-friendly clothing. If this dress is any indication, their stuff is insanely soft, comfortable, well-made, and pretty.

So. Life lesson of the day is: Wear what makes you feel great, and stop worrying about perfection. I’m mainly talking to myself here, but if it resonates with anyone else, even better.

Just a quickie post today because we got back from Chicago yesterday and I’m exhausted! It was a fun trip and a great way to celebrate my graduation with my family. Oh, did I mention I graduated law school on Saturday? Yeah, that happened.

We stayed at the Palmer House, and can I just say…it’s amazing. The location is awesome (practically across the street from Millennium Park and the Art Institute), it has a really cool history (nerd alert!), it’s beeaauutiful, and it’s actually not as expensive as I just made it sound. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that the bar in the lobby has some fantastic cocktails. 😉

Point is: I highly recommend the Palmer House next time you’re in Chicago. I’ll tell you more about my trip in a later post!

Check it out…I’m officially halfway done with the Looking Lucky style challenge. This is my #5 out of the 10 trends. In case you’re taking the challenge for a spin and you weren’t sure what “local love” meant, here’s an example. Just show a little pride for your hometown or home state (or your current town/state, if different). Wear something from a local brand or boutique, or even a local jewelry artist or something. If you’re not feeling quite so hipster, just rock a t-shirt with a sports team or college.

For bonus points (which aren’t actually worth anything), wear your “local love” outfit to eat at a local restaurant. I wore this last Sunday to go out for pizza and beer with a bunch of my fellow law review nerds. I’ve been having fun wearing heels on weekends recently…when you think about it, a day when you don’t have much to do is pretty much the perfect day to wear uncomfortable shoes.

Thanks to everyone who’s been joining in on the challenge this month and sharing your looks on Instagram! Remember there are multiple giveaways in conjunction with this challenge, so you’re definitely gonna want to jump on this bandwagon!

So. You might have noticed one of the 10 trends for the Looking Lucky challenge is “cropped.” Originally it was cropped tops specifically, but then we just went with cropped because it gives you a little more room for interpretation. Because I’m an overachiever, I decided to rock a cropped top AND pants at the same time on Saturday.

For those of you afraid of the crop top trend, let this be a lesson to you. The crop tops of 2014 are not worn the same way the crop tops of 2001 were. It’s not about showing off your belly ring anymore (for the record, I never had one). I mean depending on your age, the occasion, and how many sit-ups you do, I guess you could still show a bunch of midriff and get away with it. But if you’re over 20, aren’t going clubbing in Miami, and can’t remember the last time you did a sit-up (unless you count time time you had to stretch really far to reach the bag of chips at the end of your bed), you still don’t have to cast off the crop top trend. If you layer it over a longer shirt like I’m doing here, you don’t have to show even a sliver of skin if you don’t want to. If you’re slightly more daring, I also love the idea of wearing a crop top with a high waisted skirt, so you just see a hint of skin right above the waist. I’m definitely going to try that some weekend when it warms up a little more! I might do a few sit-ups before I do it though…just to be safe.

So what do you think about crop tops now? Have I convinced you? If the idea intrigues you but you don’t want to spend money on one, you can always temporarily “hem” a shirt with fabric tape! Man, I am just full of helpful tips today. You’re welcome.

I don’t think I ever got around to telling you what I did last weekend (although it was documented on Instagram just like everything else I do). Well, after a super boring but super mandatory test Saturday morning, we headed down to Bloomington. Saturday was cold and rainy, but Sunday warmed up and was pretty darn gorgeous. Gorgeous enough to warrant a cute dress and a stop by Oliver Winery on the way out of town. I’ve been there a dozen times, but does tasting wine ever get old? I think not. I may or may not have taken home a couple “souvenirs.”

Back when I was working full time, I wore heels a lot during the day, so I always wore flats on the weekend to give my feet a break. For some reason I’ve been in a major heels mood recently, but I refuse to wear heels (besides boots) to school when I’m walking up and down stairs with a heavy bag. Just…no. Ouch.

So to get my fix, I’ll wear them on the weekend! Duh. I’m not sure why I don’t do this more often because it makes my jeans, tee, and leather jacket look pretty damn fancy. I wore this last Sunday to go out to lunch, then run a couple errands before returning to my dungeon of studying. I know it’s cheesy, but going out in the world for a couple hours to strut around in hot pink pumps really made my day.

On a side note, I love these sunglasses – the shape and color kind of make me think of the wings on a vintage car. And who doesn’t want an old car on their face?

This is what I wore Saturday for the Macy’s 5 Fall Essentials show, and then out for dinner and patio music-listening later. If it were up to me (and let’s face it – most things should be up to me), leather accents would have been on the list of 5 essentials for fall. How about I just make it the unofficial #6? OK great. Done and done.

Seriously, I’ve been missing leather all summer. It just adds the perfect touch of badass. Not that I need it, obviously. Few things are more badass than a mint green quilted bag and a necklace with giant flowers on it. I think after I graduate and pass the bar, I’m going to get business cards made that say “Badass Lawyer” under my name. But the cards will also have a faux leather paneling on them…just to make sure the point gets across.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish myself a happy birthday! Feel free to follow suit. There’s not much exciting about turning 28, especially when your birthday falls on a Tuesday. Luckily, a dozen of my wonderful friends celebrated with me on Sunday, which is when I wore this outfit. We started off with an epic champagne brunch, so naturally I wore a shirt with fruit all over it. If there was ever a shirt that said “I came to get my brunch on,” then this is it.

Brunch was followed by shopping, more cocktails, and then a movie. Not everyone’s idea of a fun day, but it’s definitely mine! You have to do what I want because it’s my birthday, dammit. And I came to get my brunch on.
