I’ve made my decision. Decision made. I’m doing the Take One, Pass it On Challenge again for the month of November! Please hold your applause till the end.

You might remember I came up with the idea for the Take One remix challenge back in February (#HumbleBrag). It was a ton of fun and a huge success. You can see the February roundup here.

Here’s How the Challenge Works:

  • Start out by wearing any outfit you want to wear.
  • The next day, take one thing from the previous day’s outfit and wear it again in a new way.
  • The next day, take one thing (besides the already repeated item) from the day before, and…you get the idea.
  • Do this for as long as you want!

Why Would Any Sane Person Want to Do This?

  • Unlike other popular remix challenges, it doesn’t require a bunch of planning ahead of time.
  • It makes getting dressed easier because you always have somewhere to start.
  • It challenges you to get creative with your wardrobe.
  • It curbs shopping habits (not that any of us have that problem) because you’re focused on getting new uses out of what you already have.
  • And most importantly, if you’re a blogger and you post about your experience with the Take One, Pass it On challenge, I’ll post your link in a roundup each week you do it!

I hope you’ll all consider trying out the challenge with me, whether it’s for a week or the whole rest of the year! It might sound intimidating, but the feedback from those who did it last time was overwhelmingly positive. If you blog about it, just be sure to mention “Sarah’s Real Life” and include a link. Then be sure to let me know you’re doing the challenge so I can include you in the roundup (see the Contact/Collaborate tab on the main menu above for my email).

Ready…set…REMIX!

(You may now applaud.)

Take One, Pass it On: The Finale

In case you’re just joining us, here’s what was going on last month. In January I had an idea to invent my own “wardrobe remix.” I liked the idea of the 30×30 remix, but I kept putting it off because of all the prep work it takes before you start.

So instead I came up with the idea to take an item from each day’s outfit and re-wear it the next day in a new way. And the next day take a different item to repeat, and so on. I went big and decided to do this for a full month. Need proof? Here are all 28 outfits from February:

If you’re having trouble spotting all the “passed on” pieces, see my weekly roundups here: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4.

Some days this challenge was a little difficult, but most days it was fun. Probably the coolest part about doing the remix and putting it on the blog was all the great feedback I got, especially the other bloggers who joined it and posted their remixed outfit too! So instead of giving my (biased) view of how fabulous my own idea was, I’ll tell you what the “critics” have been saying:

“I think this type of wardrobe remix is much more accessible for the every day woman who doesn’t want to do too much prep. It’s great for travel, because you can build a suitcase where pieces are worn several different ways. And it’s fantastic for those days you’re feeling uninspired about your wardrobe. Just pick a piece you love and remix it into a new outfit you might not have thought about before.”

AJ Wears Clothes

“This just gives me justification for throwing my clothes on a chair…to be picked up and remixed again the next day!”

Here & Now

“It was loads of fun and definitely worth a little extra effort.  It really goes to show… with a little planning and creativity, you can get maximum usage from a single garment or accessory without looking as though you’ve worn the same thing every day.”

Closet Strategy

“This not only challenged my styling skills…but also helped me shop my closet for interesting and dynamic ways to pair the clothing I already own.”

South On Broadway

“Consider your passing piece an outfit primer in the morning. … I definitely see myself using this strategy on days when I am tired or uninspired, or when I want to try remixing a piece back-to-back.”

VV Boutique Style

“Five Stars! The best idea anyone has ever had, ever! Sarah deserves the Nobel Peace Prize!”

-OK, I made that one up myself.

While my remix month is over, I will definitely use this strategy again and maybe even document another full month sometime. Even though I’m not posting links anymore, if anyone else decides to try the Take One, Pass it On Remix Challenge, I definitely want to hear about it! Share the remix with your friends people. Seeing my idea spread around the internet makes me feel pretty special. You want to make me feel special, right? Good.

Still Going Strong:

Ikat Believe it’s Not Leather

My repeat item today is these gray and silver flats. I got them several years ago at Target. Considering they were probably about $25, I’m pretty satisfied with how long they’ve lasted.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I feel like Target went through a disappointing phase fashion-wise for a couple years. In college I got practically everything I owned from Target, and then between maybe 2009-2011 it seemed like their stock was just kind of blah. Everything started looking cheap and boring.

But boy has Target been proving me wrong recently. They’ve really stepped it up in every department and I’m back to wanting everything I see. You know when you really need some AA batteries, so you go to Target, and then $80 later you have new sunglasses, a cardigan, a dress, and a Sandra Bullock movie, and then you get home and you’re like, “Why doesn’t my remote work? Oh right. I need batteries. Better go to Target…”

I know you know what I’m talking about. That’s starting to happen again. It’s great…and it’s terrible. And speaking of Target…In case anyone’s wondering, I did hit up the Prabal Gurung collection over the weekend and grabbed a couple things. You’ll see them before too long!

Shirt: J. Crew Factory (similar, similar brown print)

Faux Leather Jacket: Express

Jeans: American Eagle

Shoes: Target (similar)

Sunglasses: Madewell

Bracelet: Marc by  Marc Jacobs (it’s rubber and stretchy…how cool is that?!)

Take One, Pass it On: Week 1

You guys. I completed the first week of Take One, Pass it On with flying colors! Well…there were a lot of colors, but not a lot of flying. But one out of two ain’t bad. The first couple days were a bit of a struggle, but by the end of the week it got easier and pretty fun. I’m looking forward to the rest of the month.

Check out the first 7 outfits, lined up all nice and pretty with nifty labels so your brain doesn’t have to work so hard (it’s Saturday, after all):

I’ve been blown away by the response to my remix idea (I mean knew it was awesome; I just didn’t know if other people were cool enough to recognize my genius). Here are a few other bloggers that are playing along already. I’m sure there will be more of you in the coming weeks!
