Take One, Pass it On: The Finale

In case you’re just joining us, here’s what was going on last month. In January I had an idea to invent my own “wardrobe remix.” I liked the idea of the 30×30 remix, but I kept putting it off because of all the prep work it takes before you start.

So instead I came up with the idea to take an item from each day’s outfit and re-wear it the next day in a new way. And the next day take a different item to repeat, and so on. I went big and decided to do this for a full month. Need proof? Here are all 28 outfits from February:

If you’re having trouble spotting all the “passed on” pieces, see my weekly roundups here: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4.

Some days this challenge was a little difficult, but most days it was fun. Probably the coolest part about doing the remix and putting it on the blog was all the great feedback I got, especially the other bloggers who joined it and posted their remixed outfit too! So instead of giving my (biased) view of how fabulous my own idea was, I’ll tell you what the “critics” have been saying:

“I think this type of wardrobe remix is much more accessible for the every day woman who doesn’t want to do too much prep. It’s great for travel, because you can build a suitcase where pieces are worn several different ways. And it’s fantastic for those days you’re feeling uninspired about your wardrobe. Just pick a piece you love and remix it into a new outfit you might not have thought about before.”

AJ Wears Clothes

“This just gives me justification for throwing my clothes on a chair…to be picked up and remixed again the next day!”

Here & Now

“It was loads of fun and definitely worth a little extra effort.  It really goes to show… with a little planning and creativity, you can get maximum usage from a single garment or accessory without looking as though you’ve worn the same thing every day.”

Closet Strategy

“This not only challenged my styling skills…but also helped me shop my closet for interesting and dynamic ways to pair the clothing I already own.”

South On Broadway

“Consider your passing piece an outfit primer in the morning. … I definitely see myself using this strategy on days when I am tired or uninspired, or when I want to try remixing a piece back-to-back.”

VV Boutique Style

“Five Stars! The best idea anyone has ever had, ever! Sarah deserves the Nobel Peace Prize!”

-OK, I made that one up myself.

While my remix month is over, I will definitely use this strategy again and maybe even document another full month sometime. Even though I’m not posting links anymore, if anyone else decides to try the Take One, Pass it On Remix Challenge, I definitely want to hear about it! Share the remix with your friends people. Seeing my idea spread around the internet makes me feel pretty special. You want to make me feel special, right? Good.

Can you spot the repeat item today? It’s the tights. Yeah, I know. Kind of a cop-out. But there wasn’t anything else I felt like repeating, and it’s my remix, so I can do whatever I want. Deal with it.

Speaking of the Take One, Pass it On remix challenge, I accidentally left out one blogger who joined the challenge last week. I’m giving Jaime of South on Broadway a special shout-out now in the hopes that she won’t make a voodoo doll out of me. So go visit her (very cute) blog and see what she’s been remixing!

OK, back to me. If you remember the old tagline that used to be under my old header, it said this blog was supposed to feature “real things I wear and do.” Recently I’ve been heavy on the wearing and light on the doing. That’s because I’ve spent most of the past couple months going to school and work, so there’s not much special to share there.

BUT! Over the weekend, I took this cute little outfit to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis for a special adults-only night. The Children’s Museum is so cool, but unfortunately it tends to be full of children most of the time. Buzzkill, right? Well, thanks to Adult Swim, I got to drink adult beverages while simultaneously acting like someone who’s not allowed to have adult beverages. Here are a few pictures from the event:

Shameless self-promotion

There I am on the Twitter feed, posting my Vine video! (P.S. If you’re part of the Vine crowd, follow me! My username is SarahsRealLife.)

I’ve gotta keep the blurb today pretty short…I’m writing this at the end of a long day and my eyes don’t want to stay open. They actually haven’t wanted to stay open since about three hours after I woke up. Coffee? Why yes, I tried that. Diet Coke? Yep, twice. Sleeping? That sounds like the best cure.

Before I start nodding off, I’ll point out my remix item of the day: these jeans! Since I’m not a jeans-everyday person, and this is my only pair of distressed denim, I decided they were unique enough for me to repeat. Fun fact: I wore tights under these jeans today and yesterday. Exposed skin and sub-zero wind chills don’t mix.

Take One, Pass it On: Week 1

You guys. I completed the first week of Take One, Pass it On with flying colors! Well…there were a lot of colors, but not a lot of flying. But one out of two ain’t bad. The first couple days were a bit of a struggle, but by the end of the week it got easier and pretty fun. I’m looking forward to the rest of the month.

Check out the first 7 outfits, lined up all nice and pretty with nifty labels so your brain doesn’t have to work so hard (it’s Saturday, after all):

I’ve been blown away by the response to my remix idea (I mean knew it was awesome; I just didn’t know if other people were cool enough to recognize my genius). Here are a few other bloggers that are playing along already. I’m sure there will be more of you in the coming weeks!

Matchy Matchy

It might seem nerdy that my belt and shoes match, but it was an accident so I feel like that makes it OK. See watch:

Nerdy: “Look you guys! [pushes glasses up nose] I matched my belt and my shoes!”

Not nerdy: “Oh, do my belt and my shoes match? I hadn’t noticed. I just threw this on.”

See how that works?

Anyway, I’m happy to report that the first week of my Take One, Pass it On outfit remix challenge is on the books! Tomorrow I’ll post a recap of the first 7 outfits, along with links to other blogs who have already started the challenge. I already know about a few of you, but if you want your links included, be sure to link back to me somehow – You can post a link to this post on your blog (which should give me a trackback notification), on your Facebook page (tagging Sarah’s Real Life), or on Twitter (with the hashtag #TakeOne).

Now that I have bangs…and my J. Crew flats…and I’m on the way to being a lawyer…I’m pretty much the First Lady, right? I mean all I have to do is grown 6 inches and be black. We’re practically twins.

P.S. Did you spot my repeat item of the day? It’s a little more subtle this time. See yesterday’s post to figure it out!
