OK, here’s what happened while I was getting this post ready: I was resizing these photos and saving them under new file names. I wore this to the Broad Ripple Art Fair over the weekend, so I was naming the files “artfair1,” “artfair2,” etc. Meanwhile, in my head I was thinking of genius things to write (per usual).

Then apparently my fingers got ahead of my brain because I typed “fartfair” for one of the file names, and I laughed so hard that all my genius ideas disappeared. I think you’ll agree that’s a totally normal adult response, so you’ll forgive me for my lack of relevant commentary today.

#LookingLucky 10: Neon

I kind of backed myself into a corner for the end of the Looking Lucky challenge. The last trend I had to do was neon, which I thought would be easy because I have tons of bright colors in my closet. Well, bright isn’t quite the same thing as neon, and it turns out my choices were actually pretty limited. My best option was this highlighter yellow pencil skirt, but the only occasion I had to dress for was a casual brunch, so I dressed it down as much as I could. I actually really like how it turned out. Maybe I’ll make casual pencil skirt brunches a new thing. You heard it here first.

By the way, I’m putting this post together on the eve of my first exam of my last semester – just four little tests and I’ll be done with law school! In case you’re wondering why I’m not studying right now, let me explain. I’ve found that I’m in a much better state of mind for a big exam when I stop studying around 7:00 the night before. Then I can have some dinner, relax, watch some mindless TV, and get to bed early. The later I study, the more I start to worry that I don’t know enough, and the less likely I am to actually absorb anything.

Maybe it’s counterintuitive, but sometimes NOT studying (in moderation) is a good way to prepare for a test just because it helps you stay sane! In fact, that’s exactly why I went to brunch in this outfit. During finals week (which is really finals weeks plural), I try to get out of the house at least every other day. Sometimes I study at Starbucks, or take a break for a couple hours to go out to dinner or the mall. Getting out of my sweatpants and looking like an actual functioning adult human being is a healthy thing in my book.

Speaking of books, maybe I’ll take one more look at mine before tomorrow morning. Just in case.

I don’t think I ever got around to telling you what I did last weekend (although it was documented on Instagram just like everything else I do). Well, after a super boring but super mandatory test Saturday morning, we headed down to Bloomington. Saturday was cold and rainy, but Sunday warmed up and was pretty darn gorgeous. Gorgeous enough to warrant a cute dress and a stop by Oliver Winery on the way out of town. I’ve been there a dozen times, but does tasting wine ever get old? I think not. I may or may not have taken home a couple “souvenirs.”

You already know I had a great day last Friday (because I got to see Clinton Kelly in action) but did I mention that pretty much every other thing about the day was fabulous? Like for one thing, it actually felt like spring so I could wear this. It was so glorious, I took the whole day off from all things school related just so I could enjoy it to the fullest. Of course now it’s freezing again, and spring break is over, so I’m just going to stay inside with my books today and every once in a while glance at these photos to remember when my life was less tragic.

I don’t remember exactly what I had planned to wear on Tuesday; all I know is it did not work out. I was crunched for time and didn’t know how/where to start over, and then I had a miraculous pre-coffee stroke of genius: Pin to Real Life is making a comeback! (If you’re just joining us, you can get the low down on Pin to Real Life here.)

I pinned this outfit from Merrick a few days ago because I loved the mix of patterns and textures, plus it was so simple and comfortable. Her printed pants are way cuter than mine, but I did what I could. And I love her addition of yellow flats, but (shockingly) I don’t have any! So I added my yellow with a necklace instead.

Many thanks to Merrick and Pinterest for saving me from going to school in my PJs!

You know my birthday was last week but THIS, folks, is my very first outfit post as a 28-year-old. These photos were taken on my birthday, post-dinner and pre-cupcakes.

If you see any new wrinkles or gray hairs, please don’t tell me. I would rather remain blissfully unaware. I’m not too worried though, because I did get carded at dinner 🙂

Also, in case you missed the announcement, I am in NYC right now, so you can see what I’m up to on Instagram!

On Campus

maxi skirt, jean jacket, IU campus, things to do in Bloomington IN maxi skirt, jean jacket, IU campus, things to do in Bloomington IN

Welcome to Part II of my anniversary weekend adventure!  In case I didn’t make it clear yesterday (or during basketball season), I absolutely love bragging about my alma mater. I wouldn’t trade my undergrad experiences for anything. Not even for all the cute shoes in the world.  I have fun every time I go back to visit, and Sunday was no exception.

We slept in (always the best way to start a Sunday – sorry, church), then had brunch al fresco at Scholar’s Inn Bakehouse. Next was shopping on Kirkwood Avenue – always a staple activity for any B-town trip. If you want a peek at Kirkwood, check out the first photo in this post from January!

Then we headed to the IU Art Museum to walk around the galleries. As an art history major, I spent plenty of time there back in the day, but just like the rest of campus, I never get tired of visiting. The museum was designed by I.M. Pei, who also designed the pyramid part of the Louvre. No big deal. It’s really cool because there are almost no 90 degree angles in the building except some of the windows and where the walls meet the floor. I assume that’s because it would be hard to hang paintings on angled walls.

The red sculpture you see in the photos above is in front of the museum. It’s called “Indiana Arc” by Charles O. Perry.

The rest of these photos were taken just a few steps away from the Art Museum at Showalter Fountain.  In the picture above, you can see my old stomping grounds in the background – the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts! Yay for impractical bachelor’s degrees!

Summer Fun

cookout1 cookout2

Is summer not the best, you guys? After a hard but productive school year, I am totally taking advantage of every opportunity for fun and relaxation. It’s actually probably a good thing that summer is only a few months out of the year because I would be exhausted from all the sun and guacamole and booze.

cookout4 cookout5

Yesterday we had a cookout with some friends. It was the perfect activity for a Saturday evening and – more importantly – the perfect occasion to wear these new shorts my mom got me (thanks Mom).

cookout6

As usual, our friends’ 4-year-old was the master of ceremonies, giving very detailed instructions for the direction bubbles should be blown and what we should draw with sidewalk chalk (I drew a pink sandwich and a rainbow car).

cookout7

Said 4-year-old actually took this picture of me and Kristin. Not bad, right?

cookout8

She also wanted to join in the outfit photos. Keep an eye out for Gabby’s Real Life blog in 2033.

Vroom Vroom

Indianapolis is a pretty special place to be on the Sunday before Memorial Day. Every year tens of thousands of people come here to see the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. It’s 200 laps totaling 500 miles, taken at speeds well over 150mph.

The drivers come from all over the world to participate in one of the most prestigious events on the IndyCar calendar. And you can’t blame them because the winner gets a pretty sweet cash prize, plus a free jug of milk. This year, Tony Kanaan from Brazil won the race. It was his 12th time in the race but his first win. Good job Tony!

So obviously, you can guess where I was yesterday…

jamesdean1

…I was at the Indiana State Museum to see the Eternal James Dean exhibition.

What, you think I want to stand in line for hours, then cram into the bleachers with a bunch of drunk people and watch cars drive around in circles? Puh-lease.

So I decided to go with an equally Hoosier activity, but more classy. In case you were not aware, James Dean hails from Indiana. Incidentally, I learned from the exhibition that James was a big fan of the Indy 500 and car racing. Unfortunately, his passion for driving didn’t turn out too well, but we won’t dwell on that. Instead, how about this fun fact: James had some really random hobbies like conga-drumming and bull fighting.

Also, he was super hot. Honestly, I don’t know why you would want to look at pictures of me right now when you could go watch Rebel Without a Cause instead, but just in case, here’s what I wore. You can also see a couple more photos on Instagram.

Denim on (Colored) Denim

Exciting news, friends! I am officially DONE with my second year of law school! The only slight downside is that I only have one year left to wear stuff like this on weekdays. I’ll relish it while I can.

I know I’ve already said it, but I’m so glad I finally got a jean jacket. I’ve already gotten 3 wears out of this guy. I’m still not a fan of doubling up on the blue denim (Texas Tuxedo style), but I’m cool with mixing the jacket with colored denim.  Throw in some polka dots, and it’s the perfect outfit for someone who’s 2/3 of a lawyer and 100% awesome.
