I wore this on a Thursday night a couple weeks ago to go out for drinks (Thirsty Thursday! Half-price cocktails – woot!) and then went to a little blogger party at a local gift shop. The shop, Twisted Sisters, is actually pretty close to my apartment, and I had driven by it countless times on my way to class or work downtown. But you know how it is – sometimes there are places you know exist but you never visit because you don’t have the time or the reason. But free snacks and booze? Yep, that’s reason enough for me!

Like most gift shops, the theme of Twisted Sisters seems to be “random stuff.” Luckily, it’s a very well curated assortment of random stuff. Meaning that if you need a gift for someone (including yourself)…you might actually find it there. And that’s something that can’t be said for a lot of those obnoxiously kitschy gift shops. Here are a few of my favorite things I spotted while sipping my cab sauv at Twisted Sisters:

Bags and accessories? You know I had to put these first.

They also had a great assortment of local goodies. Indy pride!

And what gift shop would be complete without some initialed home decor and non-traditional greeting cards?!

If you live in the Indianapolis area and find yourself on Binford’s North End, I can definitely recommend stopping by Twisted Sisters. (There’s a Starbucks just across the parking lot, if that helps.) And if you don’t live around these parts, why not stop by a new small business in your own neck of the woods this week?

Thanks to Twisted Sisters for sponsoring this post! Find out more about them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.

WARMfest: the Outfits & the Music

Welcome back from the long weekend, everyone! I hope yours was lovely.  I spent a good chunk of mine at WARMfest, which was a pretty good distraction from the fact that I’m no longer at the beach. I relaxed on a picnic blanket, I ate from food trucks, I did some pretty great people-watching, and (obviously) I listened to good music.

Below are my festival outfits from Saturday and Sunday. They’re nothing terribly exciting – I was more worried about being comfortable than impressing anyone. You shouldn’t be disappointed…I mean “real life” is right there in the blog title. You knew what you were getting in to. If you’re looking for ridiculous, impractical festival wear, there are plenty of other blogs for that.

My outfit photos are in color, and I included some photos of my favorite bands in black & white. So if you’re just here for the clothes, that part’s easy to find. But if you’re a music fan, be sure to check out the black & white stuff, too!

On Saturday we paid a little extra to take a “cruise” on the White River while being entertained by folk rock singer Megan Maudlin. She was really great, as was her friend Dave Vogt who played with her. I’m not convinced he’s real, though. I think he had a little mouse inside his guitar, and the mouse had its own tiny guitar that was supplying half the notes he was playing. He was insane.

This was Sweet Poison Victim (great name, right?)…their sound is like a blend of African and Caribbean music. Very fun.

Of Montreal was the headliner for Saturday. I loved the music, just don’t ask me to explain the…dancers?

Beauty & the Booze

Over the weekend I had my first manicure in more than 3 years. My last one was horrible and left me with a bloody cuticle. Yes, I said bloody. So what made me willing to give manicures another try? Well, I got an invitation to try out the Beauty Bar at Geist, a salon that has a liquor license – the first of its kind in Indiana, apparently! So you can go get a manicure, pedicure, haircut, whatever…all while sipping a glass of wine or a cocktail. (In case you’re wondering, the people giving you the manicure, pedicure, or haircut do NOT get tipsy while they serve you. Probably a good call.)

My appointment was in the morning, so I went with a mimosa. Vitamin C, yo.

I’m very happy to report that my manicure at the Beauty Bar was 1000% better than my last one. And that’s not just the booze talking. I told the nail technician (is that what they’re called?) my horror story, so she was very gentle on my sensitive cuticles. She also gave a kick-ass hand massage! Very relaxing.

The color I chose was “Mint Convertible” by CND Vinylux. It claims to last 7 days. We shall see! I’m on day 4 now and it still looks as great as it did day-of. Here’s the finished product…

Besides the great manicure and cocktail, I also liked that this place didn’t feel like a typical salon. They’re usually so clinical-looking, you know? And they smell like weird chemicals. This place was super cute and more inviting than my own apartment.

You know what all this means? The Beauty Bar gets the coveted SASS (Sarah’s Awesome Stamp of Satisfaction)! I don’t hand these out easily, folks. So for my central Indiana folks, I definitely recommend a visit to the Beauty Bar. I’m sure it would be a great place for a bridal party to get their nails done together. You can also get massages and waxing; see the full list of services here.

Disclosure: I was given a complimentary manicure and cocktail in exchange for a review. However, all opinions are my own, as I have not figured out how to have anyone else’s opinions.

What possessed me to dress like a pack of Starburst? I don’t know. Maybe the fact that I was going to a fringe theater show, so why not take a little risk. I will never be the weirdest dressed person at a fringe show, even when I look like a walking bowl of sherbet.

If you’re one of my Indianapolis readers, I highly recommend you see The Great Bike Race, which is at Theatre on the Square on Mass Ave. It’s “loosely based” on the second running of the Tour de France. If you don’t laugh at least 20 times, see a doctor immediately. There’s something wrong with you. If you don’t laugh at all, see a mortician. You are dead. Get tickets here(This post was in no way sponsored by Indy Fringe or by the Great Bike Race, but I should probably mention I know a couple of people in the show. Still, I don’t even like them that much, so my opinion is totally unbiased.)

Check it out…I’m officially halfway done with the Looking Lucky style challenge. This is my #5 out of the 10 trends. In case you’re taking the challenge for a spin and you weren’t sure what “local love” meant, here’s an example. Just show a little pride for your hometown or home state (or your current town/state, if different). Wear something from a local brand or boutique, or even a local jewelry artist or something. If you’re not feeling quite so hipster, just rock a t-shirt with a sports team or college.

For bonus points (which aren’t actually worth anything), wear your “local love” outfit to eat at a local restaurant. I wore this last Sunday to go out for pizza and beer with a bunch of my fellow law review nerds. I’ve been having fun wearing heels on weekends recently…when you think about it, a day when you don’t have much to do is pretty much the perfect day to wear uncomfortable shoes.

Thanks to everyone who’s been joining in on the challenge this month and sharing your looks on Instagram! Remember there are multiple giveaways in conjunction with this challenge, so you’re definitely gonna want to jump on this bandwagon!

Fun fact: Indianapolis is home to the largest children’s museum in the world. The only bad thing about the museum is that there are always a bunch of children there. Go figure. But in 2013, Adult Swim Indy was born. On this one night of the year, they open the museum up to adults only. Tickets are pricey because it’s a fundraiser, but thanks to the generosity of a friend (whose dad is a sponsor of the event), I got to go last year and again this past weekend.

It is…so. much. fun. Picture 2500 drunk grownups hula hooping and riding a carousel. There are tasty food samples from local vendors (beer cheese soup has changed my life), a DJ, and a drum circle surrounded by dinosaur skeletons. You can see a few photos from the night on my Instagram feed.

As an added bonus, Adult Swim has become sort of fashion show too! I think people really take advantage of the chance to wear something different from what they would wear on a typical weekend. I don’t know if you knew this about me, but I quite enjoy an excuse to put together a fun outfit, and this is what I came up with! I figured as long as I’m going to be at a children’s museum, I might as well act like a child and insist on wearing all my favorite things at once: plaid, leather, ankle boots, fun jewelry, red lipstick, and an unexpected hat that clashes with everything else. I’m a big girl…I’ll do what I want.

Yes, my remix challenge is over, and yes, I’m remixing these boots again. I swear it’s not an addiction. I can stop remixing whenever I want.

Anyway, when I got this necklace from Sylca Designs, I felt like it had “Christmas” written all over it! So naturally I wore it on Friday to Circle of Lights in downtown Indianapolis. That’s when they string lights on a big monument so it looks like a giant Christmas tree. The night involves calling four restaurants to get a dinner reservation, sitting in traffic, paying $15 to park, fighting huge crowds of people, and standing outside in the cold…but it’s just so darn festive you don’t really mind.

See?

Animal (Fashion) House

It’s Friday, folks! Why not do something a little different today? Glad you suggested it. Last week I spent a fabulous day at ZooBoo at the Indianapolis Zoo. I’m a big fan of our zoo already, but ZooBoo is an especially fun time to go because the zoo is all decorated! If you’re in the area, I really recommend going, especially if you love Halloween and/or have young kids.

Anyway, when I was there, I saw lots of little kids dressed up as animals. We’ve all worn at animal costume at least once in our lives, right? For Halloween or a school play or dance recital? I know I have. But I also got to thinking how funny it is that a lot of regular clothes we wear as adults have some pretty obvious animal influence. And why shouldn’t they? Animals always look fabulous.

I put together a few examples inspired by some of the animals I saw at the Indy Zoo. This is mostly just for fun, but I’ve included links to the clothes in case you’re interested in where to buy. And don’t worry…as far as I know, none of the animals pictured were actually used to make the clothes! 🙂

I hope I’m not the only one who took advantage of Free Museum Day on Saturday! I’m already a big fan of museums, but I’m an equally big fan of free things, so it was pretty much an ideal situation for a poor nerd like me.

There were several museums in my area participating, and we picked the Indiana History Center and Rhythm Discovery Center. The first one is pretty self-explanatory, but the second one is an interactive museum of percussion instruments. Pretty cool, right? You can see some photos from Saturday on my Instagram feed.

After a fun-filled day of learning, we walked over to the state house to get these photos of my outfit. In case you weren’t aware, it’s ankle boot season! And I’m well on my way to opening my own boot museum. (OK, that was a joke but how awesome would that be?!)

Megan & Liz

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are my own.

megan and liz american rag tour

One of many cool things about being a blogger: once in a while, people pay me to drive down the street and listen to a couple girls sing in a Macy’s. OK, so that particular gig has only happened once, but still. The point is…on Thursday I went to see Megan and Liz play a few songs for the American Rag Tour.

Can I be honest? I had never heard of them. Judging my the rest of the audience, I’m guessing it’s because I’m a little older than the target demographic. When they were born, I was doing long division. But I must admit, they were pretty darn adorable and fun. If you find guilty pleasure in super pop-py girl music, you can check out some of their songs on their YouTube channel. Their recordings are mostly very “produced,” but having seen them live and acoustic, I’m happy to report they have actual talent. And really nice hair.

As for what I wore to blend in with the juniors crowd, here’s a sneak peek. The outfit post will be up on Tuesday!
