Ever since I’ve been back from the beach, I’ve had a lot of trouble getting myself dressed. Like in real clothes, with shoes and accessories and everything. Oh, to be back at the beach, where a bikini top counts as a bra (or as a shirt, for that matter). I spent an embarrassingly long time coming up with this outfit to run errands and go to the movies on Monday. It mostly worked out OK, but my feet were killing me by the end of the day. But I would like to point out that I spent most of last week in bare feet, so I’m still getting used to the shoe thing. Either I make very impractical shoe choices, or I really needed that vacation. Probably both.

Double Navy + a New ‘Do

Every once in a while I dig the whole monochromatic thing. Yesterday was one of those days, apparently. I felt like a had a brand new dress just by doubling up on the navy. And speaking of colors, if it looks like my hair’s a little darker, that’s because it is. Maybe I’m just looking forward to fall, but I felt like switching it up a little. I wore this hair and navy out for a pizza date last night.

That’s all for today, folks! I have a wedding to go to on Saturday, then I’m leaving for the BEACH! My mind is already on the weekend, hence the lack of the fantastic wit to which you have become so accustomed. Hang in there; it’ll be back.

Outfit + Sarcastic Hair Tutorial

I did my hair like this last week sometime and someone commented on Instagram that it looked really good. So I thought I’d do a tutorial on how to do…

a, like, totally casual updo

Step 1: Wake up at least 10 minutes late.

Step 2: Jump in the shower and get your hair wet. Wash it, don’t wash it. I couldn’t care less.

Step 3: Towel dry. Really rough it up the way you’re not supposed to if you don’t want frizz.

Step 4: Pick up your brush. Now laugh at it and put it back down.

Step 5: Flip your head over and craft yourself some sort of bun-type thing secured only with one elastic. If it looks like crap, too bad. You only get one chance.

Step 6: Spray head with hairspray so you can feel a little like you’re an adult.

Ta da! You’re beautiful.

Barristers’ Ball 2014

I did this to my hair all by myself! I have no idea if I could recreate it. But I curled my hair, then made 2 ponytails, then used  A LOT of bobby pins to pin little chunks randomly. I put the pins a couple inches from the bottom so curly bits would hang out everywhere. Kinda cute? Or total mess?

Man, I love Oscars weekend. Naturally, I was dressed to the nines and posed for a lot of pictures.

Oh, not for the Oscars though. This was Saturday…for Barristers’ Ball. On the night of the Oscars, I wore a sweatshirt and fuzzy socks and sat on my couch. That’s how I roll.

Anyway, Barristers’ Ball. It’s prom night but in law school. Really, it’s more like a wedding reception, but the majority of the guests are incredibly stressed and badly in need of a night out. We’re also badly in need of an excuse to wear something fancy. Last year I wore a dress to Barristers’ Ball – which I wore again for NYE – but this year I went with a skirt and top in the hopes I would be able to re-wear them both separately multiple times.

The top, necklace, and skirt all came from ModCloth, which made for a kind of cute and quirky, quasi-retro vibe. You know, something Zooey Deschanel would wear. Maybe not to the Oscars, but definitely for spinning around and general frolicking.

Except for the crappy DJ who seemed to think every song could be improved by being shortened to a minute and a half and covered up by his own inane commentary, the night was fun. If you didn’t see them already, there are a few more photos on Instagram!

Have a good week, everyone. May you wear sequins and tulle every day (even if only on the inside).

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you all had a fabulous weekend. If you didn’t, no worries…you can live vicariously through mine, which was pretty fantastic. On Saturday night I went to the wedding of a law school friend and wore this fancy schmancy dress that my buddies at H&M sent me. Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have picked it out for myself but I’m kind of glad I got peer pressured into it. The whole sheer, deep V, cut-out back business is pretty sexy and not usually the kind of thing I’m drawn to, but I actually felt pretty confident in this.

Speaking of H&M and peer pressure, I of course have to remind you that if you live in the U.S. you can order this dress (and lots of others) online now! I have my eye on this chambray dress for my next order. Oh and don’t forget about the 50 States of Fashion contest either. All you have to do is snap a photo of your stylish self and post it on Instagram with the hash tag #HMShopOnlineIN or whatever your state’s abbreviation is! You can find all the entries so far at www.50statesoffashion.com/start.

Fresh Hair & Not-so-fresh Chambray

Oh, hello there. What’s going on, you ask? Not much, just rocking some bangs like nobody’s business. And also rocking this skirt like it’s my job for the second day in a row. In case it’s not obvious, this outfit from Saturday is topped off with a fresh haircut and highlights. You know what wasn’t fresh? This shirt. I was going to make this chambray my repeat item tomorrow (for my Take One, Pass it On remix), but by the end of the day I started noticing that I didn’t exactly smell like a field of fresh flowers. If you know what I mean. I realized that I got this shirt over the summer (June maybe?) and I’ve never washed it. Laundry was never my forte.

Sunday in the Park with Clothes

I know Saturday is the traditional date night, but I quite enjoy Sunday afternoon dates. If you have all your fun on Saturday night and save the errands and chores (if you do those things) for Sunday, it’s kind of like ending the weekend on a lame note. Sometimes I would rather do my boring grown-up things on Saturday and enjoy my last day of my weekend.

On this particular Sunday, we went to see To Rome With Love. I’m a big Woody Allen fan, so I liked it. I also like living vicariously through movies set in beautiful places I’ve never been. If you liked Midnight in Paris, you’ll probably like this one too.

Oh, about the hair. I can only do this when I’m not trying, so don’t ask me to give you a tutorial or anything.

Working for the Weekend

On this particular day (casual Friday – woo hoo!) I was sporting what my sister would call “big country hair.” In the South, this would actually be kind of flat, but by my standards, it’s big country hair. I thought about wearing my daisy dukes and confederate flag crop top, but then I remembered that I don’t own those things. Plus, I don’t think they would be work appropriate. Just a hunch.

I do believe this ensemble is work appropriate, however. And this would totally be one of those outfits they show in a magazine as something that could go from day to evening (“just take a clutch!”), but as I am an old lady who stays home and watches Pretty Little Liars on Netflix on Friday nights, it was just a particularly sassy work outfit.

The only time I had to do photos of this outfit was at 1:00pm, so it was way too bright to get good quality pictures. But I’m doing a post on it anyway, just because (a) I was having a good hair day, and anyone who has a style blog must be a tad bit narcissistic, and (b) I really like the print of this top. It has tiny little birds, but from a distance it just looks like little flecks.

I wore this for a short day at work (casual Friday) and then got in the car for a 5-hour drive to Saint Louis for a weekend with some family. I’ll post pictures from the trip in the next couple days.
