On Friday night we went to the Lambda Legal benefit, which I didn’t even know was happening until the day before. Luckily, we had a friend who helped hook us up with tickets. (But I promise…once I have a job, I will donate to Lambda Legal and make up for all the free booze and cheese I consumed.) I’m so so glad we got to go, and not just because I like to hang out with lawyers. This was a really great year for marriage equality, and for once I actually got to enjoy the benefits instead of just celebrating other states’ changes from afar.

The event was packed with “celebrities” like Camilla Taylor, who made a big win in the 7th Circuit recently, and Beth White, my county’s clerk who kept her office open extra hours to let a ton of people get married in June (including me). OK, maybe they’re not celebrities by most people’s standards, but they are to me and to most of the people at the benefit!

Needless to say, there were lots of happy people and lots of celebration on Friday night. I can’t wait to see what we’re celebrating next year!

This bag probably seems really random if you’re not a modern art fan. But do a Google search for Jeff Koons and it’ll start to make more sense. As an art history major, you might think I learned all about him in undergrad, but funny enough I actually learned more about him in law school (he gets sued a lot –  those pesky copyright laws)!

So why do I have a handbag with Jeff Koons’ famous balloon dog on it? Because Koons has partnered with H&M to celebrate the opening of a new museum-inspired H&M store in NYC, and starting July 17, a limited number of these bags will be sold at select stores, on H&M’s website, and at the Whitney Museum.

I wouldn’t classify it as an “everyday” bag, but you have to admit it adds a little something unique and unexpected to this outfit! I’ll probably be sharing my bag with Kristin, because when she saw it she had the reaction of a small child who’s just seen…oh, I don’t know…a balloon animal.

If you want to get your own Koons for H&M balloon dog bag, they’re $49.99. I don’t know exactly how many there are or how popular they’ll be, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to stalk the website tomorrow if you can’t live without one. Or if you live in a major US city, they might be in a store near you (the info I have says Chicago, LA, and Dallas). Good luck!

Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen a color prettier than this shirt. Are you raising your hand? Put it down because you’re lying. Loft calls it “crisp seafoam” but I would call it “barely mint.” It sort of looks like it was a white shirt that got washed with a bright mint green shirt so it got just a tiny bit discolored. In case you’re wondering, NO, that is not what happened. I wash everything in cold water because I don’t trust myself to do any sort of household chores correctly.

I wore this on Tuesday night for a date at Cheesecake Factory. We really like going on dates outside the normal Friday and Saturday night. It’s good excuse to look a little special while still staying pretty comfy. The date was excellent. By the end of the night I was pregnant…with a food baby.

You know my birthday was last week but THIS, folks, is my very first outfit post as a 28-year-old. These photos were taken on my birthday, post-dinner and pre-cupcakes.

If you see any new wrinkles or gray hairs, please don’t tell me. I would rather remain blissfully unaware. I’m not too worried though, because I did get carded at dinner 🙂

Also, in case you missed the announcement, I am in NYC right now, so you can see what I’m up to on Instagram!

Pink Drinks & Pleats

Are you dying over how perfectly this dress goes with the wall art in the background? Because I am. I wore this dress a couple weeks ago for a weeknight date (I actually wore the same thing to work that day, but I had the cardigan buttoned up, and no belt or clutch). We had dinner at Sabbatical in Broad Ripple, which was fantastic, and on the way back to the car we saw this wall on the side of a diner or something. So no, I didn’t actually drink a pink milkshake or whatever that’s supposed to be, but if I had, this would have been a great dress for it, no?

Unfortunately, if I ever do wear this dress again – for pink drinking or anything else – it won’t have these cute pleats in it. Why? Well because sometimes you don’t know how to eat nachos like a lady and you spill on yourself and then you wash your dress because the tag says you can wash and dry it but it doesn’t tell you that if you do wash and dry it then you will wash out all the pleats but only half way so it really just looks like a very evenly wrinkled dress. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Date Night Do-Over

Remember how I told you about the date night fail last week? Well, I made reservations at the Melting Pot Sunday night and we got our delayed fondue fix. What is so great about dipping bread and broccoli into a big bowl of steamy cheese, you may ask? The answer is: everything. And don’t even get me started on the chocolate s’more fondue for dessert. A fit and flare dress definitely comes in handy for meals like this one. I might have to start doing that thing people do – what’s it called? – oh yeah…exercising.

Breaking the Rules

Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life

I guess there’s a fashion rule about wearing black and brown or black and navy together. Is there a rule against navy and brown together? If there is, I’m totally breaking it. And I’m going to write to my Congressman proposing an amendment to the Fashion Constitution. And while they’re amending, they might as well repeal the “no white after Labor Day” rule too. Oh and I’ll throw in a little something about making it unconstitutional for states to deny marriage rights to same-sex couples (maybe if I sneak that in with the fashion stuff they won’t notice). Thank you and good day.

Gatsby Date Outfit

gatsby1 gatsby2 gatsby3 gatsby4 gatsby5 gatsby6 gatsby7 gatsbyz

Last week I was at Target getting a Mother’s Day card and I naturally ended up in the accessories section – since it’s so close to the cards and all. Anywho, Tar-Jay had a bunch of 20s-inspired jewelry and I thought it would be fun grab a little something to wear on my much anticipated Great Gatsby movie date! (I went with a necklace that I can’t find online, but check your local Target.)

The art deco-esque necklace was sort of a jumping off point for this 20s-inspired outfit. I wasn’t going for a costumey look, just a few Gatsby-era touches. Since I didn’t know how to fake a bob, I went for a Gibson tuck – I guess those were going out of style by the 1920s, but it’s the best vintage look I could do with my limited skills. The drapiness of this cardigan kind of reminded me of the draped backs on fancy 20s dresses. I finished it off with a bunch of fake pearls on my wrist and my very favorite shoes which just happened to have an art deco feel to them.

P.S. The movie was good, but I have to admit I was mostly excited for the costumes, and they did not disappoint!

P.P.S. That’s me doing the Charleston in the montage at the end. If you want to see more of my amazing dance skills, be sure to check out the outtakes I posted over the weekend.

Sister Act

sisteract1 sisteract2 sisteract3 sisteract4 sisteract5 sisteract6

The title of this post isn’t a pun…this is actually the outfit I wore to go see Sister Act the musical. I’m not in the habit of throwing around great reviews if I don’t mean it, but this show was seriously hilarious and entertaining. I would tell you about the bad parts, but there were nun. There was a big mass of people in the audience, and we were all cracking up. I was praying it would go on even longer. I mean Jesus Christ was that a great show!

Like I said…no puns here.

In other news, it’s almost the end of the month, which means the end of the remix challenge! The repeat item of the day is this belt. Check out how I wore it yesterday. Tomorrow I’ll post outfit #28 and a Week 4 roundup. If you’ve joined the remix in the past week, be sure to let me know so I can include your link.

Melty

date1 date2 date3 date4 date5

Yesterday was my wife’s birthday so I took her out to dinner at the Melting Pot. Except for the part where I gestured wildly about chocolate fondu and accidentally knocked my pinot noir all over my lap, it was a great time. Good think I elected to wear black, right? I should probably just always wear black when I’m around chocolate or wine because I tend to get very excited about them, and one or both is bound to wind up as an accidental accessory.
