My sixth and final semester of law school has officially begun, and this is what I wore for my first day back. I had the genius idea to sign up for an 8:30am class on Mondays, and with the Golden Globes the night before, well…let’s just say I didn’t wear the hat solely for the fashion statement. Sarah’s hair be greasy!

Clearly I’m not very good at following the “take one thing off before you leave the house” rule, because not only did I add a hat, I also added this scarf. For some reason I felt like the royal blue boots just came out of nowhere and I wanted something to tie the look together. There’s a little bit of royal blue in the scarf so that made me feel better. And speaking of these royal blue boots, aren’t they amazing?! The correct answer is yes.

Macy’s Back to School

This is a sponsored post. Everywhere compensated me for writing about the following event, but all opinions and witty commentary are my own.

Tomorrow I start year 3 of law school – my very last first day of school ever! I probably said that on the first day of senior year of college, but I really mean it this time. I already did plenty of clothes shopping in NYC, but yesterday I went to get textbooks and highlighters (no Trapper Keeper though unfortunately).

Coincidentally, yesterday I was also asked to attend a back to school event at Macy’s with Radio Disney. You could shop (duh), play games, and meet the members of Cimorelli. Obviously, as a mature adult with no kids, I never listen to the insanely catchy pop songs they play on Radio Disney, and it certainly isn’t number 2 on my car presets. That would just be silly. And since I never listen to Radio Disney, I of course had no idea who Cimorelli were and didn’t sing along when the DJ played their song. Or maybe it was the opposite of what I just said. You’ll never know.

OK, so maybe I had heard the Cimorelli song a couple times, but I didn’t realize they were so popular! There was a huge line to meet them. (No, I didn’t stand in it. Promise.)

I can only hope these kids got around to shopping once they got their autographs. Back to school shopping is serious business, folks! Just ask this guy:

He clearly takes his job as balloon animal artist very seriously. How else would he craft such works of art as this orange bunch of grapes with ears on a stick?

Suffice it to say this was not your typical back to school shopping event! I don’t know if things like this existed when I was a kid. It’s entirely possible that they did and my mom just made sure I didn’t know about them.

What do I remember about back to school shopping? Mainly: Limited Too. Do you guys remember that store? I think they’re all called Justice now. Limited Too was the best. I had quite the collection of plaid scrunchies thanks to that place. I also had a lot of things with peace signs and smiley faces. I remember trying on half the store and wanting to get pretty much everything and my mom would make me narrow it down. But why can’t I have all the clothes?! Man, that must have been exhausting. Sorry, mom.

To all you parents out there, I do not envy you! Best of luck sending your kiddos back to school…and wish me luck on my 3L year!

Hey there, lovely readers! Thanks to everyone who has been following my NYC adventures on Instagram. In the meantime, here’s the outfit I wore last week to the Megan & Liz show. Since it just happens to include a couple of new goodies from H&M, this is a good time to remind you that tomorrow is the last day to enter the 50 States of Fashion Contest! Just Instagram a photo of yourself in a killer outfit and tag it with #HMShopOnlineXX (fill in your state’s initials). You could win one of several $250 H&M gift cards, or the grand prize of a $1000 gift card and a trip to NYC. Since I am in NYC right now I can confirm that it’s a fun place to go. So enter away!

Incidentally, this is also a Pin to Real Life outfit! See my inspiration here.

Breaking the Rules

Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life Navy & Brown - Sarah's Real Life

I guess there’s a fashion rule about wearing black and brown or black and navy together. Is there a rule against navy and brown together? If there is, I’m totally breaking it. And I’m going to write to my Congressman proposing an amendment to the Fashion Constitution. And while they’re amending, they might as well repeal the “no white after Labor Day” rule too. Oh and I’ll throw in a little something about making it unconstitutional for states to deny marriage rights to same-sex couples (maybe if I sneak that in with the fashion stuff they won’t notice). Thank you and good day.

Brights & Beige

Hello friends and frenemies! Hope you’re all enjoying your weekend so far. Hitting up some Memorial Day sales perhaps? I thought so. Good for you. You deserve it. Even if I don’t know you…I’m sure you deserve it. If you need someone to tell you where the sales are, be sure to follow me on Facebook or Twitter, where I post sale links and promo codes on a regular basis. More importantly, I share other random anecdotes and pictures of stuff. That really wasn’t very convincing but I tried my best.

I thought I’d share this outfit with you today because a neutral cotton dress with healthy doses of pink and yellow will get you through tomorrow whether you’re at work or on a day off. I have the day off but I will probably spend it in my PJs. Not even mad about it.

Comfy Chic

comfychic1 comfychic2 comfychic3 comfychic4 comfychic5 comfychic6

What a great outfit for a Saturday night, right? Yeah. Except I wore this on Tuesday night. OK, here’s what happened…

I wasn’t going anywhere fancy or dressy (a pub then a comedy club), which is why I wanted to change out of the pencil skirt and cardigan I wore to work that day. The temps had climbed to 80 by the late afternoon, so I knew I wanted to wear a skirt. This skirt might look constricting, but it’s actually really soft and stretchy. Bottom: picked.

So then I thought, hmmm…I should wear a top I haven’t worn in a while. But something loose and comfortable. Top: picked.

Finally, I needed to put something on my feet. Since nearly every day of the past 4 months I’ve had to go to either work or school (or both), I thought I’d wear a pair of shoes I wouldn’t wear either of those places. Shoes: picked.

I put all this on, looked at myself in the mirror and thought “Where are you going, Sarah? It’s Tuesday.” But hey, I thought I looked pretty good, and I felt super comfortable, which is what I was going for. The fact that I looked kind of dressed up was just an accident.

Here’s my advice for when you feel overdressed: just strut with confidence like you’ve got somewhere really important to go later, or like you’re visiting from a much more sophisticated city. Everyone will think you’re awesome. Or at the very least you will think you’re awesome, and that’s what counts.

Sarah v. Mother Nature: Round 3

eshakti1 eshakti2 eshakti3 eshakti4 eshakti5 eshakti6 eshakti7

A few weeks back, eShakti offered to let me pick out something from their new spring collection. I was super excited since I loved my first eShakti dress. I picked out the springiest of the spring frocks and I couldn’t wait for the right weather and the right occasion to wear it. Over the weekend, I had to accept the fact that I was not going to have the right weather for awhile. But I did have the right occasion (date night!) to wear the dress. So I layered up and proved to that bitch Mother Nature that I will wear my spring dress now! I think I finally won this round. That’s Sarah-1, Mother Nature-2. I’m not giving up on this fight.

Anywho, in case you’re not familiar, eShakti is an online retailer that sells dresses, skirts, and tops in a ton of different styles. You can customize all kinds of things like hem length, sleeve length, and neckline. You can order normal sizes, or you can enter your measurements and get a customized garment for a few extra bucks. They also have bridesmaids dresses now!

If you’d like to try out eShakti, you can get 20% off your order with the code “SRLBLOG” through March 31st. Woo hoo! Enter this code in the Privilege Discount field at checkout.
