I’m always looking for stand-out pieces, whether it’s bright colors, patterns, unique shapes, or other little details. But I do in fact have “basics” in my closet. I don’t usually wear this many of them at one time, though. It’s not so bad. It feels very French, n’est-ce pas? Maybe I should try it more often.
I wore this on Saturday to head down to Bloomington for a friend’s graduation party. Not knowing what kind of party it would be, I thought some casual but classy basics (and some snazzy shoes) would work. I guess they did because no one kicked me out. If you need someone to wear casual but classy basics to your next party, I’m available and looking for practice. Parties that serve lots of good cheese and/or cupcakes will have first priority.

Remember when it was winter forever and I wouldn’t stop complaining? Well now that it’s spring, let me go ahead and complain about that too. See the thing with spring is: it doesn’t really know what season it wants to be. The forecast could say there’s a high of 65, but that doesn’t happen until 5:00pm. In the morning when I head out, it could be 45.
My solution is to go bare on the bottom and bundle up on top. That means my legs are a little too cold in the morning, and my arms are a little too hot in the afternoon. By my logic, my body’s internal thermometer averages out, so at the end of the day, I can combine the hot and the cold in my head and then reflect fondly on my general comfort level. How does this make sense? It really doesn’t. But it’s the best idea I have.

It has been a very silver white winter, and it needs to MELT INTO F$%&ING SPRING ALREADY. I knew it was coming, but waking up to cold and snow yesterday was still so hard after 2 days in a row of 60+ degrees. And it wasn’t just snow – it was huge flakes of really wet snow. And it was windy. So walking outside was kind of like being in a snowball fight with Buddy the Elf. It’s mid-March. #snoverit
Even though the weather was totally inappropriate, at least this top kinda looks like it has cute little snowflakes on it. I do love a theme. But this top is still SUPPOSED to be for SPRING. I want to wear it on its own with a floral pencil skirt and nude pumps. One day soon…

Isn’t it funny how things come full circle? When you’re a baby, you wear a bib so you don’t get food all over your onesie. Then you grow up and you wear a bib (you might wear a onesie too), but it might be more of a beaded flower bib, which doesn’t help so much with the food catching but it does help with the compliment catching.
Then you get old and decrepit and you probably wear a more functional bib again. Then you die and…well, I’m not entirely sure what happens at that point, but there’s probably a better forum for that discussion.

These boots are my new lifesaver. Or legsaver I guess. I’ve been wearing jeans A LOT recently just because it’s so cold that I can’t bear to expose my legs (even with tights) to the elements. But at a certain point I just get tired of jeans. And by “I get tired of jeans,” I mean “all my jeans are in the ginormous pile of laundry in the corner of my bedroom.” Then I realized that my over-the-knee boots give me an extra 4 inches or so of coverage compared to regular old knee-high boots. It makes a big difference, lemme tell you. Plus I wear tall socks for an extra layer. So that leaves just a couple inches of thigh out in the cold. I’m not a doctor but I’m thinking [even my] thighs have more insulation than the lower half of the leg…amiright, ladies?

Chambray and flannel layered? I can pretend I’m just super cool and trendy, but it’s partly out of necessity: it’s still really freaking cold here. Hence the gloves – I swear I’m not about to commit a murder (I’ll leave that to my cat).
I just realized I don’t think I’ve ever shared my glasses story on the blog. Sit back; you’re in for a treat.
The first 25 years of my life, I had super-human, better-than-20-20 vision. Then toward the end of my first semester of law school, I started noticing that the longer I spent staring at a book or a computer, the harder it was to focus. Sometimes I would get bad headaches or have to squint to see things that used to be clear.
So after finals I went to the optometrist and got the horrible news: My vision had taken a nose dive…all the way down to 20/20. And – get this – I have a slight astigmatism. Heartbreaking story, right? Luckily, the eye doctor didn’t make fun of me. She actually said she could give me an itty bitty prescription for eyeglasses to sharpen things up to the way I was used to.
Secretly, I had always kind of wanted a reason to pick out glasses frames – they were the one thing missing from my accessories collection! Before you laugh at me for rocking my practically fake spectacles, they really do make a difference. I got a headache after every exam my first semester, but second semester (and third, fourth, and fifth) I wore my glasses and didn’t get any. I don’t wear them all time, but they’re great for long days at school. OK, fine…they’re also great for looking cute and smart.
Some fine print (put on your glasses to read it): GlassesUSA.com sponsored this post! If you shop for sunglasses or eyeglasses online, check out their site and use the following discount codes if you buy: “FS15” for 15% off and free shipping on any order over $50. “Blog10” for 10% off prescription glasses.

I hope some other 90s kids remember Carmen Sandiego and I hope this hat made the theme song get stuck in your head. You’re welcome.
I’m not usually much of a matchy matcher, but this hat and coat make such a statement I decided to kinda tie everything together by going burgundy with my jeans and lips, too.
Speaking of lips, for the past week or so I’ve been slathering mine with Enza’s Lip Treatment. It’s this stuff that’s made to boost collagen to plump up your lips and keep them nice and moisturized. Plus, my favorite part is that it goes on super smooth and it smells scrumptious! It’s clear, so you can put it over lipstick for a glossier look (which is what I’m doing here).
In honor of the upcoming kissing-and-other-mushy-stuff holiday, Enza is throwing an Instagram contest so you can win your very own lip treatment (a $30 value)! Here are the details…
How to Enter:
- Follow me (sarahsreallife) and Enza (enzaprgirl) on Instagram
- Instagram a selfie of your smoochy face – the cheesier the better (for my entertainment)
- Give it whatever caption you want, but end it with this jibberish: @sarahsreallife #EnzaEssentials #LoveMyLips
Be sure to enter by Valentine’s Day! Open to US residents only. Winner will be chosen randomly.
And if selfies aren’t your thing but luscious lips are, you can buy your own lip treatment – today (Feb. 6) ONLY, the lip treatment is on sale for $10.

Florida in December is a strange experience. There are Christmas lights everywhere and yet you can get away with bare legs and a light jacket. You can sit on a patio watching people play golf while “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” plays from the speakers. Keep dreaming, people. Keep dreaming.
I’ll share a few other outfits from my Florida trip over the next few days – so those of you in cold climates (including me) can look at them and be jealous. You’re welcome!

You see that little strip of snow struggling to stay frozen?! It’s definitely gone by now. Good riddance. We have to melt away the old snow to make room for the new snow that will inevitably come. Sort of like how I have to donate and consign old clothes to make room for the new ones that will inevitably show up in my closet. (I wonder how they get there? It’s a mystery.) Funny enough, taking clothes to the consignment store was one of the errands I ran while wearing this outfit.
And speaking of this outfit, it was inspired by a photo I pinned from Pink Peonies! I already had all the basic elements, so I just needed this unseasonably warm day so I could get away with wearing lighter layers. You can see more of my “Pin to Real Life” outfits here.

We all know them: annoying overachievers. In my case, the most annoying overachiever I know is myself. If you saw Tuesday’s outfit post, you might have already noticed I “passed on” the polka dot tights AND the ankle boots. Partly because I’m an overachiever – why take just one and pass it on when you can take two? But also partly because I really liked how the tights and booties looked together. This time I added some socks to make it a little more casual for school – plus it just looks cute.
Oh, and in case you don’t follow me on Instagram, surprise! I got a haircut and went super blonde!
