Mixed Feelings

I’m having mixed feelings about this summer’s weather. On the one hand, I thoroughly enjoyed going outside without melting. On the other hand, I only went to the pool one time and the water was too cold to swim. Back on the first hand, it was nice wearing all my cute cardigans and blazers to my internship. And on the other hand one last time, it’s usually the dog days of summer that make me fed up and ready for fall.

Anyway, just as I was coming to terms with the fact that fall is almost here (I did go back to school this week, after all), it FINALLY got hot. Where were these temps when I wanted to play outside in a sundress? Instead it has to be 90 degrees outside when I’m inside studying. So I somehow have to figure out an outfit where I won’t die in the heat walking to the law building OR freeze to death in my law review office. (Did I mention I have an office? Baller status.) I’m patting myself on the back for buying this jacket in the spring. And I’m patting my mom on the back for buying me these shorts. My mom and I are the smartest people I know. The dumbest person? Whoever makes the weather happen.

Turns out picking your first-day-of-school outfit is just as exciting in 19th grade as it was in 4th grade. And here it is – my very last first-day-of-school outfit ever! It’s a pretty damn good one if I do say so myself. Just like my earlier days, I wore some new things (this adorable chambray from Kate Spade Saturday and nude ballet flats from H&M), and tried to incorporate some trends without looking like I was trying too hard.

And speaking of trends, I hope you already yelled at me through your computer for wearing denim on denim when I swore I’d never do it! What can I say? If there’s one thing I’ve learned in law school, it’s that every rule has an exception (and sometimes the exceptions have exceptions and involve a four-factor balancing test).

I guess I found an exception to my double denim rule: The rule does not apply when one or both denims are sufficiently girly such that the wearer does not appear to the reasonable person to be preparing to paint a house or other structure, including but not limited to office buildings, sheds, and garages.

I wish “Fashion Police” were a real thing, because then you would need fashion attorneys and judges, and I would be SO GOOD AT IT.

Well, all my NYC vacation recap posts are over. I guess that means back to reality, right? Sort of. How about back to the 1980s? Yeah, that sounds fun.

Last weekend, Kristin (you remember Kristin) performed in an 80s cabaret, and she not so subtly mentioned that audience participation was encouraged. I really did want to dress the part, but I had just done some killer shopping in NYC, so I wanted to show off my new purchases.

I went for the best of both worlds: instead of going in “costume,” I wore some of my new duds with a retro spin. Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to break in a faux leather mini skirt than at an 80s party, can you? I paired it with my rather strong-shouldered top from Kate Spade Saturday (next best thing to shoulder pads), wayfarer-esque shades, some punk touches, and plenty of neon pink.

I probably wouldn’t have put together this look if it weren’t for the occasion, but I really like how it turned out! It definitely said 80s, but I also didn’t feel totally out of place in 2013.

NYC Day 3

Today I have photos for you from the third and last day of my NYC vacation. That last day was also the busiest. By the end (actually by the afternoon) my feet looked like a pregnant lady’s they were so swollen. Now that I’ve recovered, I can say it was worth it. So here are all the fun places where my tired little tootsies took me:

high line nyc,

Fun #1: The High Line, a park that was built on an old railroad. It’s so much cooler than it sounds, I swear! I can safely say I’ve never been to a park quite like it. It’s not the kind of park where you go to play frisbee with your dog. It’s more of a walking and sightseeing park. It runs above the streets on the west side of Manhattan from 34th Street down to Gansevoort. I definitely recommend checking this place out – it’s still in progress so there will be even more of it in another couple years.

kate spade saturday pop up, meatpacking district nyc

Fun #2: Shopping! We walked to the southern end of the High Line, which dropped us in the meatpacking district. And wouldn’t you know it? That’s where the Kate Spade Saturday pop up shop is! I had only checked out the Saturday collection online, and I was nervous about ordering without trying things on or seeing the quality in person. Kate did not disappoint! I grabbed 2 tops and a necklace for pretty reasonable prices. You’ll see them on the blog soon 🙂

brooklyn bridge

Fun #3: Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. This was one major tourist attraction that I had never visited. Now I can check it off my NYC to-do list! We (accidentally) rode the subway to Brooklyn, so we had the best view for the walk. The main thing I learned on my walk? People do not pay attention to the very clear markings that show you where to walk.

Fun #4: Nerd alert! After getting off the bridge in Manhattan, we were really close to the building that houses the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission. I spent many many hours researching them for my law review paper last year, so it only seemed appropriate to snap a photo outside the building. Nerd alert over.

bite lip lab nyc, custom lipstick

Last but definitely not least…Fun #5: The Bite Lip Lab, where I created my own custom lipstick!  I read about this place on another blog, and I knew I wanted to squeeze in a stop on my trip. The lab is in Soho, and it’s a tiny but really cool-looking (and colorful) shop. It sounds expensive, but it actually cost about the same price as your typical off-the-shelf lipstick from a brand like YSL.

bite lip lab nyc, soho, custom lipstick

First I told them what kind of shade I wanted (coral but not too peachy), and they mixed up some colors for me to try on.

I also got to pick from 5 scents – I went with violet, but there were some minty and fruity ones too.

Then they mixed up my color, melted it down, and poured it into a mold that sat on a cold surface for a few minutes until it hardened. It was actually really quick! I love how it turned out. I’m wearing my custom color in this post.

Ta da! Told you it was a busy day. I’m glad to be back home and getting into the groove of school, but I’ll be ready to go back to the Big Apple before too long. Thanks to all my friends who made my trip memorable!

It’s Monday, and you know what that means? It’s my first day back at school! Oy. Definitely a good time to rewind to last Monday, which was day 2 of the NYC vacation.

We spent a good chunk of the day romping (get it?) around Central Park. We had been before, but it’s so huge there were plenty of spots we hadn’t checked out, including the Shakespeare Garden, seen in the last 3 photos.

We also took a kick-ass carousel ride, and I say that without a hint of sarcasm. I’ve ridden quite a few merry-go-rounds in my day, and they’re not all the same. This one went faster than most so you actually felt the wind in your hair. Plus the music was awesome – I mean, they played Johnny Cash. How many other carousels can say that? And it was only $3 so it’s cheaper than a cup of coffee at most places in the city.

Central Park definitely got the Sarah’s Awesome Stamp of Satisfaction (SASS) last week. Note to self: get an actual SASS stamp made and carry it with you at all times.

Macy’s Back to School

This is a sponsored post. Everywhere compensated me for writing about the following event, but all opinions and witty commentary are my own.

Tomorrow I start year 3 of law school – my very last first day of school ever! I probably said that on the first day of senior year of college, but I really mean it this time. I already did plenty of clothes shopping in NYC, but yesterday I went to get textbooks and highlighters (no Trapper Keeper though unfortunately).

Coincidentally, yesterday I was also asked to attend a back to school event at Macy’s with Radio Disney. You could shop (duh), play games, and meet the members of Cimorelli. Obviously, as a mature adult with no kids, I never listen to the insanely catchy pop songs they play on Radio Disney, and it certainly isn’t number 2 on my car presets. That would just be silly. And since I never listen to Radio Disney, I of course had no idea who Cimorelli were and didn’t sing along when the DJ played their song. Or maybe it was the opposite of what I just said. You’ll never know.

OK, so maybe I had heard the Cimorelli song a couple times, but I didn’t realize they were so popular! There was a huge line to meet them. (No, I didn’t stand in it. Promise.)

I can only hope these kids got around to shopping once they got their autographs. Back to school shopping is serious business, folks! Just ask this guy:

ballon animals, macy's back to school

He clearly takes his job as balloon animal artist very seriously. How else would he craft such works of art as this orange bunch of grapes with ears on a stick?

weird balloon animals, macy's back to school

Suffice it to say this was not your typical back to school shopping event! I don’t know if things like this existed when I was a kid. It’s entirely possible that they did and my mom just made sure I didn’t know about them.

What do I remember about back to school shopping? Mainly: Limited Too. Do you guys remember that store? I think they’re all called Justice now. Limited Too was the best. I had quite the collection of plaid scrunchies thanks to that place. I also had a lot of things with peace signs and smiley faces. I remember trying on half the store and wanting to get pretty much everything and my mom would make me narrow it down. But why can’t I have all the clothes?! Man, that must have been exhausting. Sorry, mom.

To all you parents out there, I do not envy you! Best of luck sending your kiddos back to school…and wish me luck on my 3L year!

Happy Friday! These are some photos from Sunday just after we got off the train from NJ. Keep in mind I spent Saturday bridesmaiding to the max in a floor length chiffon dress and lots of hairspray, so this outfit was the perfect antidote. I’m sure I looked super touristy in my t-shirt and Keds, gazing up at the tall buildings, but I don’t really care. Even though I’ve been to NYC 5 times, the first day still gets me every time! It’s just a special place.

We spent day one mostly just hanging out with friends and having great food and drinks. You can see both Kristin’s and my Instagrams from the trip under the hash tag #HarcutsDoNYC (Harcut is the name we made up by combining the first 3 letters of both of our real last names – it’s pronounced the same as “haircut” which is why we didn’t actually change our names to that when we got married).

More trip photos and tourist outfits will be up next week!

Hey everyone! I’m back from my NJ / NYC trip. I’m exhausted but in the best possible way. I’ll have plenty of photos from the trip (including outfits of course) to share with you over the next few days, but I thought I’d start with what I wore on the trip home yesterday.

For air travel I don’t really have a go-to uniform, but in the summer I generally wear more coverage on one half of my body than the other. Since airplanes have a magical way of always being either too hot or too cold, this way there’s always at least one half of me that’s comfortable. I will still complain about the other half of me though. Hash tag first world problems.

Besides that, I go pretty minimal on the jewelry so there’s less to take off at security, and I like to wear my hair down because a ponytail against an airplane seat in its full upright and locked position makes me bend my head forward like I’m praying the whole flight. If I did pray, I would probably pray for a separate plane for babies.

Good news for my fellow small-wristed ladies: I found another line of jewelry that makes some leather cuffs with 2 different snaps. The brand is called Cara, and I found this one at Target. It looks like they also carry some at Nordstrom. For the record, no one’s paying me to say this – I bought the bracelet myself and I just really care about the well-being of other dainty wrists. If you have a couple of said dainty wrists, be sure to check out this post and my Pinterest board, both dedicated to the subject.

Hey there, lovely readers! Thanks to everyone who has been following my NYC adventures on Instagram. In the meantime, here’s the outfit I wore last week to the Megan & Liz show. Since it just happens to include a couple of new goodies from H&M, this is a good time to remind you that tomorrow is the last day to enter the 50 States of Fashion Contest! Just Instagram a photo of yourself in a killer outfit and tag it with #HMShopOnlineXX (fill in your state’s initials). You could win one of several $250 H&M gift cards, or the grand prize of a $1000 gift card and a trip to NYC. Since I am in NYC right now I can confirm that it’s a fun place to go. So enter away!

Incidentally, this is also a Pin to Real Life outfit! See my inspiration here.
