Good Day for a New Dress

bodycondress1 bodycondress2 bodycondress3 bodycondress4 bodycondress5 bodycondress6 bodycondress7

Two exciting announcements:

(1) I got a new dress.

(2) The first time I wore this new dress, I found out that the epic paper I worked on all year will be getting published in the next volume of the Indiana International & Comparative Law Review.

So basically, any time I have the potential to get good news, I’m going to wear this dress. It has a 100% success rate.

This dress, by the way, is from H&M. If you don’t have a store near you, check out the links below for a couple similar options.

The Perks of a Statement Trench

trench1 trench2 trench3 trench4 trench5

I love a good statement jacket or trench. It’s a good spring layer, and it makes getting dressed easy. I can throw on jeans and a t-shirt and let the trench do the talking. Because sometimes I just don’t have that much to say. Like right now for example.

Wanted: Guest Bloggers!

guestblogger

Sometimes Sarah’s Real Life (the blog) has to move over and make room for Sarah’s real life (the actual real life). My 2L final exams are coming up soon, and I won’t be able to post outfits as often as I would like.

Rather than leave my blog inactive for days at a time, I’d like to feature guests posts. From whom? Maybe you! A guest post would involve photos of an outfit, a little about you and why what you’re wearing fits your real life. You would need to have this post prepared and ready for me to copy and paste sometime between Monday, April 22, and Wednesday, May 8. (This should be new content, not something you have already posted on your own blog.)

If you think you might be interested, please email me at spharrell[at]gmail[dot]com for more information. Be sure to include a link to your blog. I will choose guest bloggers at my own discretion based on the quality of your blog and how many bloggers I hear from!

Colorful stripes…with Leopard!

I love print mixing (as you know), but I think stripes and leopard might be my favorite combo. I would explain to you why, but you have eyes and I don’t want to insult your intelligence. I think the awesomeness is clear from the photos above.

Knotted Chambray

Did you know that a chambray shirt tied at the waist is a sure sign of spring? You’d think the calendar would be enough, but around these parts the date means very little. So you can imagine my excitement when I put on this shirt and it just tied itself, right there in the front.

Have a splendidly springy week!

My New Invention: “Work Pajamas”

[READ THIS IN YOUR BEST CHEESY INFOMERCIAL VOICE!]

Feeling under the weather but still have to go to work? Wish you could curl up on the couch in your jammies instead of sit at your desk all day in uncomfortable work clothes? [This is the part where you see black and white footage of people at work looking grumpy and fidgety.]

Now you can do both! (Sort of.)

INTRODUCING: WORK PAJAMAS!

With this simple outfit, you can feel like you’re at home in your comfy sweats while you’re at the office – without breaking the dress code!

[OK, now the infomercial’s in color and everyone looks really happy.]

These loose fitting pants are dressy on the outside and have silky lining on the inside. And who doesn’t love to sleep in a plain cotton t-shirt? Just cover with an oversized black cardigan and you’re ready for work!

But wait! There’s more!

Call in the next 10 minutes [please don’t call me] and you’ll also get these versatile black wedges! They have the height of a heel and the comfort of a flat. Perfect for finishing your work pajamas look.

[Ahem. It’s me now. I’ve had a cold the past couple days but I made it out into the world on Friday. This is what I wore.]

Spring Wish List: Where I’ll Spend & Where I’ll Save

I find that keeping a list (usually in a note on my iPhone) of things I’d like to add to my closet helps keep me from making impulse buys when I’m out shopping. This season I’m taking it a step further and dividing up my wish list items by the amount I want to spend on them. Good news: even my “big ticket” items are under $100. Here’s to a frugal spring!

Jacket (Kohl’s) // Skirt (J. Crew Factory)

You Can Never Have Too Much Black Leather!

The other day I was getting dressed and thought to myself, “this outfit would be perfect with my simple black wedges.” Then I realized I didn’t have  simple black wedges. I only had fancy scalloped suede wedges – not exactly your everyday, wear-to-school shoes. So that day I went out to look for some simple black wedges and found these at Nine West on my first try. They were on sale. Am I good or what? Go ahead and admit it: I’m the best shopper ever. Congratulations on knowing me.

Easy Outfit Transformation: Add a Denim Vest

dressvest1 dressvest2 dressvest3 dressvest4 dressvest5 dressvest6 dressvest7

Last Friday, I spent most of the day at my internship, then I had to go straight to a very small, casual party. Rather than taking the time to change completely, I waved my magic wand and said “accio denim vest!” Then I changed my shoes and put my hair in a side pony – I don’t know spells for those.

I think it worked! Maybe this vest really is magic.

P.S. I recently ran out of my favorite pink Clinique Chubby Stick (“chunky cherry“), and I went to get a new one but ended up picking this pinker and more intense color (“plushest punch“). What do you think? I really like it!

5 Ways to Wear a Leather Jacket

leatherjacket

Welcome to another episode of “How to Wear.” I’m your host, Sarah. (I’m practicing for my future in the game show industry. With this economy it’s important to have a backup plan.) I picked leather jackets for this one because they’re such a good in-between-seasons layer. In fact, some of these photos are from way back in the fall! Go ahead and drink in the versatility of a leather jacket, my friends.

No. 1…

leatherjacket1

There’s something cool about combining a shirt that says “buttoned up” – literally – and a jacket that says “I’m a rebel without a cause.” I’m partial to printed oxford shirts, but I think this would work just as well with a solid.

No. 2…

leatherjacket2

Another great juxtaposition: girly and rugged at the same time. I wore this last fall so the brown and black seemed appropriate, but I’d like to try it again this season with a more colorful dress.

No. 3…

leatherjacket3

A leather jacket is one of those classics that will never go out of style, so I like it mixed with other classics: jeans, a striped tee, and tortoiseshell shades.

No. 4…

leatherjacket4

I don’t know exactly what possessed me to wear a leather jacket with a floor-length flowing skirt and suede heels, but I’m glad I did. If you’re going out in the evening, it can get chilly, so why not try something besides a boring old stole?

No. 5…

leatherjacket5

Note that I saved this one for last because if I put it first you wouldn’t have read the other four. I’m tricksy that way. But really – the whole point of this post was to remind you that leather jackets (real or otherwise) are just jackets, and you can wear one with pretty much anything and you’ll probably look cooler than you did without it.

See the original posts for each of these looks: 1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5

My jacket is from Express’ “Minus the Leather” line. The jackets come in a variety of styles and colors.
